I laid out the string.

The burial stone '1' is marked by my bag in this photo.

If you put 'posts' in the plan and rotate it to look through, you will see that there is a gap in the posts that would allow you to have walked through the monument south-west to north-east.

But...
Must admit, there isn't any real reason for me placing the plan in the center of the Sanctuary, other than to provide a marker.

As you can see, the center post has moved at least half a meter away from the center.

I enclosed the perimeter rings (carefully avoiding the man in the sleeping bag) and set about thinking how people would have entered the rings.

I had never enclosed the rings before, always too caught up in getting the pathways right! But doing so made sense of the monument for me. Wattle and daub fences, enclose an outer and an inner ring, with the posts in the center. There would be a way in, to the outer rings (where the tarpaulin is) and another gateway into the ring I'm standing in. There may have been gaps as people moved around the circles, into the timber posts and a glimpse of something at the center?

I can't as yet see which way people would enter and leave.

The Avenue seems to belong to the time when the Sanctuary had rings of stones added to it, but I assume it respects the two, larger posts in the E ring, the Solstice stone (which doesn't have a concrete marker) and the recumbent stone in the south-west.

Now if I'd come back the next morning, I would have seen the sun!
But we were off to Swindon to meet my son, and quite honestly...without knowing if the concrete post positions should be rotated to match up with the real post holes the only thing I'd have got was more frustrated.
